There's Hope for Your Porvenir, Too.

The story of María del Pilar Espinal, and the coffee that grew back from the ashes.

Born Among the Coffee Trees

María del Pilar Espinal grew up with her brothers and sisters on a coffee farm in Galicia, a small village in the mountains of Valle del Cauca, Colombia. Her father gave her his love for the coffee trees. Her mother gave her a passion for the land. Her childhood was spent among coffee plants, fruit trees, forests, and plantain fields. That farm, Hacienda Cafetera El Porvenir, would one day become her legacy.

Leaving, and Coming Home

Like many families in rural Colombia, María del Pilar and her community were forced from their land by violence. For more than ten years, the farms stood empty. Then, thanks to God, Colombia's peace agreement, and the country's Land Restitution Unit, they returned. They found their land waiting and began to rebuild it together. Along the way, her family learned a lesson they still live by: in any battle, it's better to have peace than to be right.

The Meaning of "El Porvenir"

In Spanish, porvenir means "the future." The family motto, "Esperanza hay también para tu Porvenir" ("There's hope for your future, too"), became the vision that carried them back after the storm. It is the heart of everything we grow.

Stronger Together: ASOMORENA

Today, María del Pilar leads ASOMORENA (Asociación Agropecuaria La Morena Galicia), a nonprofit association of 84 small coffee-farming families spread across the villages of Galicia, Bugalagrande. Together they grow specialty coffee in microlots, along with plantain and banana, and they produce their own organic fertilizers. She has championed women's participation in the association, and many of its women now run their own specialty coffee microlots.

Farming That Gives Back to the Land

ASOMORENA practices clean agriculture. Instead of chemicals, the growers nourish their crops through composting, vermiculture, and biofertilizers made in their own on-farm biofactory. Their approach honors life in all its forms, guided by respect, solidarity, and forgiveness.

From Galicia to the World

Together with ASOMORENA's members, María del Pilar has exported 50 tons of coffee to Japan through Colombia's National Federation of Coffee Growers. In 2023, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) invited her to Obihiro, Japan, to represent Colombia at a gathering on the SHEP approach, a program that empowers small farmers to grow for the market. She later represented Colombia again at the 4th International SHEP Seminar in Mexico, alongside 70 specialists from 14 countries and organizations including the UN's FAO, IFAD, and the Inter-American Development Bank. There, Café Dorado Galiciano was presented as a real-world success story.

A Grower, Proudly

With a background in Social Communication and years of community development work, María del Pilar has become a true agent of change. Today she is an agricultural entrepreneur specializing in exotic coffee varietals: Geisha, Bourbon Rosado, Bourbon Amarillo, and Castillo. She still carries her cédula cafetera, the official coffee grower's ID card, and shows it with pride every time she introduces herself.

The Next Generation

Her sons Samuel and Diego are bringing the family's coffee from Galicia to homes across the United States: roasted to order, sold direct, and shared with the same care it was grown with.
